Greetings Fire Tribe,

My name is Bliss, in late June Ian Smith and I will be traveling through Ohio teaching classes in fire art and bellydance. We are from Oakland CA and we are looking forward to sharing skills as we travel to and from Wildfire. We are planning to be in Ohio late June and
would love to know what classes would be of most benefit to your community based on local interest. Feel free to share these descriptions online or send to the fire dance community in emails to see what classes people are interested in signing up for. Looking forward to connecting with you all and sharing some flow on dance and fire.

Blessings,
Bliss
bliss@blissbutterfly.com

Bliss Butterfly~

Bliss is a professional fire bellydance instructor & performer and an avid
student of the movement arts. She began her practice of yoga at fourteen
and incorporates the balance of acroyoga in dance prayerformances. She has
offered a variety of workshops at events and festivals which include
yoga, bellydance, hoop bellydance, fire bellydance, and double staff
dance. Her philosophy on the art of fire began and continues to stem from
a dance backround and gives emphasis to proper body mechanics, technique,
movement and interaction with fellow dancers. All workshops with Bliss
begin with warming up muscles with specific stretches for the areas of
repeated use in class. Bliss is a fiery bellydancer and enjoys sharing the
inspiration that is this community! www.blissbutterfly.com

PLAYSHOPS OFFERED BY BLISS BUTTERFLY

Beginning Bellydance: Study the ancient art of bellydance infused with
fresh breaths of modern style with Bliss! Learn to isolate body movements,
improve posture, increase body awareness, and dance with strength and
grace. A variety of music styles from traditional, electronica and hip hop
keep this class popping out of the box and locking it up.

Intermediate Bellydance: For dancers that have already studied bellydance
and are ready to refine skill and to discover ways to layer movements and
timing. Our warm up will begin with yoga and core strength training
exercises to advance our balance and poise. In this playshop we will pay
attention to detail of belly rolls and work on layering movements with
them. From there we will explore a wide range of shoulder possibilities
from slow and slinky to fast and tricky. Make your mind spin as we layer
movements and timing. Then we throw everything together and play with
combining slow movements with fast movements, levels and lots of laughter.
A short hafla and cool down will set the playshop to a close.

Fire Fan Bellydance: (All levels) In this playshop we will combine
bellydance with fire art dancing with fans. We will briefly discuss the
different types of fire fans, fuels and prop safety. Techniques for
spinning the fans as well as intricate formations combined with dance will
be explored as we refine ideas of presentation of the fire art in relation
to planes of the flames to the audience. Plan a workshop for your
bellydancing or fire art troupe and expand performance possibilities.

Fire Bellydance- (Intermediate) Learn to combine the movements of
bellydance with fire art. The possibilities of prop combination include
(but are not limited to) fans, palms, sword, poi, staff, double staff,
hoop or contact juggling. This class will begin with yoga to stretch and
condition the entire body, and to center into our movement and breath. We
will then drill several techniques of bellydance and learn a sequence of
dance to add our props to. Each prop is unique and will require a slight
difference of movement vocabulary, come prepared with the tools that you
feel most comfortable with so the focus can be on adding dance with your
favorite prop! We will end with a short cool down. Prior experience with
the prop of your choice is recommended for this playshop.

Double Staff Dance- (All levels) We will begin with a basic warm up
incorporating yoga postures, and an emphasis on wrist, elbow and shoulder
care. Then we will cover the concepts of beats, direction and timing to
gain orientation of our bodys' movements and the staffs' movements. We
will cover antispins, isolations, translations, newtons and some playful
dance to get you out of your head and into interacting with the audience
and your fellow flow artists. Let's dance! Some practice double staves
will be available, if you have them bring your own.

Ian Michael Smith~

I have been fire dancing for about eight years. Poi is my favorite and I
also spin staff, double staff, double whips, contact juggling, and ball
juggling. I currently perform with Vulcan Crew, Copper Lantern Fire
Theater, LumenAscent, Think13 and have recently started to work with Bliss
Butterfly. I am also a modern dancer. I have trained extensively in the
Axis Syllabus, and currently perform with Capacitor and Corpi Liquidi. I
was involved in founding the Spinagogue, and am currently involved in
creating Kindle, the first fire arts culture magazine.
ianmichaelsmith.com

PLAYSHOPS OFFERED BY IAN SMITH

Spin from the Hip (Int.)-This class is all about the pretty under-curve
that the wrist does when transitioning at the hip. We will examine
underutilized versions of moves you probably already know, like the 2-beat
weave, as well as some unusual turning techniques. Using the hip
transition can make the same pattern look completely different, and the
audience will notice the difference between the 3-beat and 5-beat weave.

Intermediate/Advanced Staff Spinning- This class will introduce off-center
grips and how they can be useful. The we will take a quick tour through
different ways to pass the staff from hand to hand, work on some pendulums
and non-linear planes and then learn technique that uses the body like a
lever to move the staff and how to use the momentum of the staff to
initiate body movement.

Intermediate Staff Dance- This Class will focus on interactions between
the staff and your body. We will do a quick overview of off-center
spinning then work with using the momentum of the staff to move your body
and visa versa. We will then work with aspects like quality and levels
and end with ways to utilize the hand that does not have the staff in it.

Poi Dance Techniques (All levels)- This class will focus on techniques and
drills I have found useful when learning to dance with poi. We will cover
pendulums, stalls, polyrhythum, turning, and hip transitions.

Beginning Contact Staff- This exiting class will introduce the building
blocks of contact staff allowing the staff to move around the body without
using the hands to grip. No experience is necessary, however basic staff
skills are recommended prior to taking this class. We will explore contact
points around the body, rolls vs. wraps, halos, movements necessary for
steves, and other useful contact moves that can be built upon for
intermediate and advanced contact staff.

PLAYSHOP OFFERED BY IAN AND BLISS

Partner Poi (Intermediate to Advanced)- The art of partner poi will add a
beautiful dynamic to performance while advancing skill level and
understanding of poi. This class will cover the basics of pendulums,
turns, timing and cues to discover ways of dancing around your partner
adding the necessary trust to advance in more difficult movements. Then
we will progress to intermediate partner poi moves of butterfly and tread
the needle gaining a greater understanding of planes. Finally explore more
advanced weave patterns and ways to interlock and transition between
different beat weaves and body orientation of you and your partner. All
participants should be able to do all these basic movements on their own
before attending this class. Please bring practice poi if you have them,
we will have some extra pairs to provide.

Hello friends of Gaiananda and The Center for World Rhythms, Suzanne and I hope your holidays were filled with joy and that the New Year finds you in health with and the promise of a fabulous 2009.
Most of you already know that the World Rhythms Center in St Bernard closed in mid October. The closing of the Center was a large personal and heartfelt loss for Suzanne and I and a much larger loss when we consider the area tribal and bellydance community. We hope that you find new places to dance and create.
Suzanne will continue to teach classes starting on Sunday January 18. She has been offered a wonderful space to share and offer tribal dance classes again. It is the Tai Chi Chaun studio in Maderia. www.Cincinnatitaichi.com
The first class is at 1:00, this class is for new dancers or for tribal sisters who had not completed mastering the Beginner I level at the World Rhythms Center or for those that would like to review and grasp some new group concepts. This class will be called Tribal East.
The second class will be called Tribal South and offered at 2:15. This class is created for tribal dancers who were at the Beginner II and Intermediate levels at World Rhythms.
The curriculums for the new classes will be slightly different. All levels will offer Tribal fast and slow moves, group dynamics and techniques to develop coordination and grace. There will be more emphasis on smaller, more intimate classes with a holistic approach in an ambiance of sacred space and gratitude. Classes will still be 8 week sessions for $80

The Gaiananda website is currently under re-construction but there is a page of class descriptions for both classes as well as other classes that will be offered in the very near future. Please view them on that site www.gaiananda.net
I will let you know when that site is up and running again.

There’s an ad for the new classes in the Jan/Feb Whole living Journal. You can pick one up at any Natural foods store or several of the restaurants in Clifton and Northside. They will be distributed January 1st.

Suzanne is creating a private studio in the recreation room in her my home in Landen. This space will be used for private and semi-private instruction. I will let you all know when that space will be finished and available for use.

It is taking a while to adjust to all of the new changes but we wanted you all to know it is coming along and about the new classes.

If you would like more information or would like to make sure you get registered for one of the new classes, (only 10 students per class) please email me at sgerard@cinci.rr.com or give me a ring 312-9628.

Roma Boombox says:
I just booked another night at the C & D in Northside (Cincinnati, Ohio). I will start DJing at 10 pm until 2 or 2:30 am.
Warm-ups and conditioning followed by drills and tips for sustainable technique, body awareness for the stage, and work with flamenco-inspired fan.
Melody & Improvisation for Musicians w/August
12:00-2:00pm	$35

Learn traditional Balkan and Middle Eastern riffs. Improvisation is de-mystified! Explore a method for playing intuitively and spontaneously-- August will teach some guidelines that can improve soloing and playing off the cuff. He will discuss how to play a supportive role with other musicians and how to manage group dynamics.
The Mezmer Society was founded in the Autumn of 2007 and fits loosely within the Tribal Fusion genre. Some of the elements that are fused include belly dance, cabaret performance, Romany music, foppish occultism, unapologetically pretentious Belle Époque café living, goodwill, bad behavior, misappropriated pop songs, and the horribly misguided notion that one can try and squeeze an entire Balkan brass band into one accordion.
The Show will feature Gaiananda and Navatas with special guests The Mezmer Society. Doors open at 7:30 pm with the hafla to follow. Advanced tickets are $15, $20 at the door. Tickets are available on Sundays at the World Rhythms Center or on line. Please visit www.gaiananda for more information.

All of us at the World Rhythms Center hope your holidays were filled with joy and peace. As many of you know, we have resumed classes after this break and we are back in full swing again for 2008! That means that we will be offering our haflas too. The next 2 haflas are community haflas and the dates are Friday, January 25th and Friday February 15th. Our next student hafla will be Friday, March 7th.

The WR Community Haflas are open haflas and we invite everyone in the belly dance community to join us. We also invite individuals, musicians and dance troupes to perform. The WR Center is a great place to perform on stage with professional lighting and sound equipment. If you want to try out a new performance or share your talent, we have a very supportive audience. If you would like to perform, please call (513) 312-9628 or 608-0056 so we can make sure to put you into our line-up.

Drummers and other musicians are welcome to come to play for the open dancing. This is a Middle Eastern hafla not a drum circle. Please be capable of following the ME rhythms and please, no djembes, ashikos or djun djuns. Thank you for understanding.

Please join us to dance, play music, have fun or just hang out.
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.
It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.
2 hours: DANCE DYNAMICS - THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GOOD AND GREAT: What makes the difference between the
average show and one that makes you think, “Wow, she was amazing?” Between the dancer whose show doesn’t quite stay
with you and the one you can’t forget? And why isn’t that dancer who seemed so fiery and fast, or did all that layering,
memorable? Probably because of dynamics. Dynamics can help you fill in what you might be missing and know what NOT to
do. When you know what these are and how to work with them, everything you do will be interesting, and nothing will be flat!
Dancing the Tarot: A benefit for Highlands Nature Sanctuary
Contributed By Fran Blasing

COMING MAY 5th, 7 PM at Greaves Hall, Northern Kentucky University:

“Dancing the Tarot” is an enchanted evening of music and dance to benefit the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. Over 40 professional artists from the tri-state area have come together to present a fabulous evening of Middle Eastern and Tribal music and dance, as well as other dance forms. Our narrator, Fanchon Shur, will weave the story of the hero’s quest as dancers bring your favorite tarot cards to life through vibrant costuming, choreography, and music.

Joining Ms. Shur are many other nationally and internationally renowned performers including Shakira al Fanninah, Gaiananda, Avasa, Zahara, Kristi Renee, the Warriors of ko sion and many more! Mini tarot readings are available during the event for a nominal donation, as well as a raffle including donated items from area businesses.

And all proceeds go to an incredibly worthy cause: the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. This grass roots non-profit organization, founded in 1995, has raised over 7 million dollars for land acquisition and conservation in various counties throughout Ohio. To date, over 3,000 acres in Ohio have been purchased for conservation. For more information, visit www.highlandssanctuary.org

Tickets are $20 per guest and are available online at www.kaleidoscopeproduction.com and in person at Midnight Muse, Aquarius Star, Mantra Wellness Center, Body of Light, 7th Street Gifts, Ali’s Boutique, Center for World Rhythms and Movement, and Lion of Babylon Studio of Arabic Dance.
We're really looking forward to playing there ourselves--and I think I have to give you my new number (I don't think I gave it to you at the Moria show at Carenza's did I?).

Hey ladies,

Totally bummed that the Rachel Brice workshops sold out? Disgusted by the cringe-worthy thought of the miles long waiting list? You don't have to sit on your couch all alone that weekend! There's something fun going on in Dayton that you might like to try!

from www.kirasoasis.com
Michelle L'amour from Chicago is coming back to teach a Burlesque workshop and give us a show with some of her dancers from her troupe: Star & Garter Burlesque!
Workshop is only open to women 18+ and you may be asked for your ID if you try to attend. If you are 18 or older, you may contact Kira for the Username and Password required to enter the page with all the details, but here are the basics:
WHEN: Saturday, March 31st
Workshop Time: 12:00 Noon - 4:00 pm...ish
$50 per person - women only 18+
Show Time: 7pm - 9pm
$15.00 per person - 18+ only, open to the public!

These workshops are tons of fun and very laid back, and the shows are sizzling hot! And a certain bunch of local tribal dancers will be performing a burlesque act under the name Booby Trap Love Stuff (it's a long drawn out inside joke). Visit Kira's website to get the login and password to the registration page.

Go ahead, do what you never thought you would dare! You won't regret it.

Thanks for coming to the show Saturday night.... it was the hottest night that Gaiananda and World Rhythms has had thus far! I couldn't sleep that night due to all the fabulous energy that was in the studio, which I obviously sucked into my body like a human straw, I am still recovering!! It was all good!

I did speak briefly with Annette and Richard (Tantra Heart/International) and they thought the performances were phenomenal! They also commented very possitively about all of our Tribe members and what wonderful energy we all have! We may try to do something collaboratively with them some time in the future! Hmmm, I get all tingly just thinking about the possibilities.

It was such an awesome feeling to see everyone having a great time and enjoying themselves immensely. We (the performers) were blown away by the enthusiasm and support that the audience showered us with... unless you have performed for such a wonderful crowd of totally open hearted and loving people, you can't imagine how electrifying and exhilarating it is!!

We apologize if people were not able to sit or dance at will due to SRO. We were unaware that we would have such a huge turnout! We and Raquy already discussed the next morning about the possibility of doing a weekend retreat full of workshops and performances at an outdoor location in the summer, with more than enough space to sit or dance ourselves into a frenzy!

Thanks to all of you who participated in this event. It has shifted us into yet another realm and we look forward to journeying with all of you in this one and to the creative possibilities it will bring.

Namaste,
> flowed in there perfectly with Camille and Suzanne. The veil dance was
> particulary lovely. And the new piece at the end...beautiful and
> captivating; really well chorographed and performed. Oh, the stage
> looked great as well. Congratulations on the big crowd. Man, what
> fun! Thanks to Raquay and the Cavemen. I can now growl like a cavemen

A reminder about the Hooping workshop This weekend, Dec. 2nd. If you can’t imagine Bellydancing with a hoop, you should see Natasha perform! Now, although I am sure we are all amazed by hooping when see it, not all of us will want to do it. For those of us who do…now is your opportunity to learn!

We have 9 dancers pre-registered, we have room for 6 more! If you are taking this workshop, Please send your payments into the studio this week (Address below.
Hooping Workshop with Natasha

December 2nd 2:00p – 4:00p

Natasha is the founder of Pyrokinetika, A safety-centric fire and performing arts organization based out of Dayton, Ohio, who are dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment for learning fire arts, and providing quality, professional entertainment. www.pyrokinetika.com

Remember how much fun hula-hooping was as a kid? Hooping as an adult is even better! Even if you could never keep a hoop up when you were a kid, Natasha guarantees you will go home with some new moves. The hoops she creates and uses are not those plastic kiddy-hoops of yesteryear. These "adult" hoops are larger, heavier, grip better, and are much easier to keep up and control! Once you see her hoop, you will want to learn this new expression of movement, it truly is another art form.

The workshop will cover: Waist hooping, Hand hooping, Stalls, Waist to hand transitions, and many more variations. Time permitting; we will learn a fun choreography to practice at home adding footwork underneath waist hooping.

Pre-registration required $30. Contact Suzanne 513 312-9628

Hello Tribe.net members,
So far, all of the students that have now signed up for the Blue Lotus workshop “Tribal Moves to 6/8 Rhythms” are from Cincinnati area tribes. This will be a four hour workshop (Sat. Oct. 7th 2 – 4 P) followed by a Blue Lotus performance www.bluelotustribe.org that evening. There are also opportunities for you and other tribes to perform that evening as well.

I know that everyone is still very disappointed that Tribal Quest Midwest has been cancelled. Many of you who planned to travel to that conference suddenly find themselves ready to immerse into an extended Tribal family to learn and dance but have no place to go.

I would like to extend an invitation to all of those dancers from outside of our local area as well, to come to the Blue Lotus workshop here in Cincinnati and dance with us! Blue Lotus will be staying at David Johnson’s but I can house up to 4 or 5 dancers, depending on how cozy everyone wants to get, and I may be able to find places for others who would like to come.

Please either email this site or contact me sgerard@cinci.rr.com (513) 312-9628 or David at 513 608-0056 ASAP to let us know if you would like to register and need to stay with another tribal dancer. If you are a local dancer or tribal musician and you would like to offer your home to other dancers/musicians, please call me as well.

If you don’t want to stay in someone else’s home, then we can provide information about area hotels and rates for you. If you need additional information about this workshop, you can view the flyer on our website www.gaiananda.net

I know it is not TQMW, but our Tribe has a very large studio and big hearts, so we hope you will feel comfortable coming to dance with us, since we couldn’t all be together at the conference. We would love to share all of our unique expressions of Tribal Music and Dance with each other at this event.

We are in the 100th hour of promoting this event and need an immediate response from you if you are interested. I am extending the $65 workshop fee until the day of the workshop, but we need to know if you are coming!!

Hello Dancers and Musicians,

The cancellation of the first Tribal Conference in the Midwest is a
great disappointment to all of us on many different levels. I feel for Paulette and her clan, I know that they put out so much towards this event only to have to cancel it with no compensation for their efforts. I am hoping they will want to try to sponsor this event again at another time. We shall see.

For now, this unfortunate change of plans may bring more students that will be able to have the
additional time and money to attend the Blue Lotus Workshop and to participate in the performances with them that evening. A few more students have signed up since they learned about TQMW
being cancelled.

This is the last opportunity we have to make this workshop happen.
If we do not have 15 students registered by the end of the day on
Sunday, Oct. 1st (I'm giving it a one day extension) we will not be
able to offer The Blue Lotus workshop either.

Let's bring this group in and show the rest of the community that
there are enough interested Tribal dancers in our area to make
putting forth the effort to sponsor an event worth their time to
offer it to us.

Dance and be well,
Suzannne

Blue Lotus is a Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Troupe out of Chicago Illinois and they are inventive dancers and wonderful teachers. Although this is a workshop on Tribal Moves to 6/8 Rhythms, this is not limited to Tribal dancers and these moves and combinations can be used in choreographies for any style of Belly Dance.

Wouldn’t it be a nice change to dance to a different rhythm other than Baladi or Chiftitelli? There is a wonderful sway and pause in the 6/8 rhythm that lends itself to many creative movement ideas. This may be the inspiration you or your troupe need to be motivated into a new expression of dance.

Remember that if our dance community wants to have unique and diverse opportunities to learn, and grow as dancers, we have to support the venues and events that are being offered. It is important to register for workshops and classes early so we have some idea of the level of interest.

If you would like to register for this workshop, please call me so I can decide if we will be able to bring this fabulous group into Cincinnati. For those of you who have already paid or wish to pay, I will hold your checks until we know if we have enough dancers registered for this event or you will be contacted and your money returned in full if it is cancelled.

Friday night is a gathering with a light supper and a showcase highlighting participating dancers from around the country and a dance and music jam with Raquy and the Cavemen- have you heard them? Wow. great drumming and energy!
Saturday night is a blow out show in a theatre with the teachers, and following the show, an afterparty with more yummy food, schmoozing, music, and dancing! This is a great way to meet your fellow dancers and get to jam, and try out all your new moves!
And shopping! Oh yeah... shopping with vendors and costume designers selling their wares --ethnic jewelry, custom designed costumes, music.
We have gotten a few different locations to take care of us for the workshops and shows and parties, all within a few block radius so that we can walk from each place-very convenient!

The past few shows we've gotten some great shots of the bands that we've been performing with (Toids, Raquy, Alma Gitana) but very few of Gaiananda! If anyone has any shots of Gaiananda on flikr or wherever could you please send me a URL so I can go through them and look for shots that we could use for the website? We actually have 3 members that aren't photodocumented anywhere (Kristi, Lauren and Mark)!
